For Brenda

I'm reading the Artist's Way by Julia Cameron and as suggested by the author, once a week, I take myself on an artist's date. Last week I went to the Dallas Arboretum and this week I was headed to Deep Ellum to photograph wall art and old architecture. I entered "Deep Ellum" into my VZ Navigator and off I went. In Utah, one always knows in which direction they're traveling. The Wasatch mountains run north and south so east is always on the mountain side. In Texas, there are NO mountains and I'm always a bit off center and not fully grounded on the planet. I head to Dallas, which is east of where I live, but when I get to Dallas...I'm lost.

As you can see by the images above, my VZ Navigator did not lead me to the old part of town. Because I didn't know which way to go to find Deep Ellum, I parked the car.

It was a partly cloudy day...lots of white puffy clouds reflecting in the glass...I decided to try to see through Brenda's eyes. A city the size of Dallas is a bit intimidating...so many cars, so many people, and so many canyons created by skyscrapers. I'm finding, so far on my two artist dates, that it does take the required two hour date to settle in, to feel more comfortable in the setting/surroundings, and to begin to see, and breath, and connect with the camera. The first hour is slow and a bit awkward...the second flies by.

It was a lot of fun to process these images. I'm still learning how to use Lightroom 4 and they do not compare with Brenda's exquisite work.

  1. Oh my gosh, Suzette! I don't know what to say about your lovely tribute. I do know what to say about your fantastic images - they are stunning! The lines, the glass, the subtle reflections, the geometric shapes! Architectural heaven. It may have started out as uncomfortable but it looks to me like you found your way through the skyscraper canyons of downtown Dallas. I want to see more! Welcome to the wonderful world of urban abstracts :)

    1. Brenda,

Thank you so much! It was pretty amazing once I got the feel of the place. As I drove home I saw so many other buildings I'd like to look at more closely. I'll need to get back down there sooner than later. It was a lot of fun!

  3. I love these images. Love abstract architecture (I admire Brenda's too).
I have failed with the morning pages and artists date - since I started a new job, I don't have enough time to do everything I want and need to do.

    1. We just can't do it all. I'm failing at it and I don't have a new job...it's hard to do. Anyway, take care and one day we'll catch up on everything!

I just remember the other day I was going to do the Artist Date too - I got sidetracked and forgot (as usual)...
